CIty transit systems feature prominently in pop culture, but
Boston's may be the only one that was the subject f a protest-folk
song. "M.T.A.," written in 1949, details the plight of a man named
Charlie, who boards the train with his token, but is faced with an
exit fare surcharge and, without the extra nickel, is doomed to
ride the train interminably. The song was a hit for the Kingston
Trio in 1959, and was so engrainged in Boston culture, that their
digital card system is now called the CharlieCard.
You can pay tribute to Charlie every time you raise a toast while wearing these sterling silver-set Boston MBTA tokens in your cuffs.
