Among Massimo Vignelli's contributions to the world of design
are the logos for IBM and American Airlines, and this famous
rendering of the New York City subway system.
The map was loathed by the commuters who had to navigate New York using its ascetic, modern, and not-to-scale design during its official usage between 1972 and 1979. (Above you see the map defaced, and channeling the terror of 70s thriller "The Taking of Pelham 1, 2, 3.") But time has healed wounds, and the graphic design has earned "classic" status in the years since its service. The design is so iconic that in 2011 the New York MTA has started to use a Massimo Vignelli-style digital map called "The Weekender" to explain weekend service interruptions.
