Although the sport of polo never really took off in New York,
the famed Polo Grounds were a series of three stadiums that, from
1888 to 1964, occupied a parcel of land in New York's Harlem
neighborhood (within sight, across the Harlem River from the
Bronx's Yankee Stadium).
The stadium housed the New York Giants baseball team (both "Willie Mays' Catch" and Bobby Thomson's "Shot Heard 'Round The World" are just two of the memorable moments that happened at the Polo Grounds), as well as the Yankees, Mets, and the NFL's Giants and Jets (who played the final sporting event at the Polo Grounds against the Buffalo Bills in 1963.
