The Modern Gentleman's Guide To D.C.

...special thanks to Chris Hogan of

Best Steak House: Charlie Palmer Steak
Washington DC had long been a steakhouse town when New York-based chef Charlie Palmer set up shop. But with a decidedly modern feel, brushed steel, and mocha leather, the urbane power-dining room and lounge are very different from the traditional brass-and-bourbon boys' clubs. At the same time, it feels wholly DC thanks to its postcard view of the Capitol, C-Span-tuned flat screens, and high-powered regulars who make Charlie Palmer their de facto lunch room.

Best Martini: Ozio Restaurant & Lounge
Opened in 1995 on K Street, DC's power corridor, Ozio quickly became a local hot spot based on its cigar bar and martini lounge reputation. In 2000, Ozio moved to a new, larger location on M Street and never looked back. Still a place to see and be seen, it's known for celebrity sightings and great cigars. Though the atmosphere is more midtown Manhattan than midtown DC, it has some of the best martinis you'll find in the city.

Best Business Breakfast: Bistro Bis
Bistro Bis is one of the best restaurants in D.C; not only because of its outstanding food, but also the quality of its people-watching. What many folks don't know is that they serve a darn good breakfast too. Located in the boutique Hotel George and walking distance from Senate offices, you can easily feel like a mover or a shaker settling in for an early morning meeting. The dining room, all warm wood and honeyed lighting, buzzes with talk of politics and shopping. Don't be surprised to see powerful and familiar faces meet and greet over coffee and fresh bread.

Best Cigar Lounge: Shelly's Back Room
Shelly's Back Room is a landmark in Washington, D.C.; a comfortable retreat for cigar lovers and those who simply want to unwind. Both a restaurant and a cigar lounge, the casual but elegant space features soft lighting, cozy couches, and over-stuffed chairs. Shelly's Back Room is home to an incredible selection of premium cigars, but don't worry, the place is fitted out with a state-of-the-art air purification system that keeps the atmosphere comfortable for all guests. If you like keeping your smokes handy, you can also lease one of their 100 private humidors.

Best Barbershop: The Grooming Lounge
The Grooming Lounge is not your typical barber shop. While you can get a great haircut with a little history thrown in at the U.S. Senate Hair Care in the Russell Senate Office Building, the Grooming Lounge is a different kind of D.C. experience. Started by two fellow with years of experience in the grooming business, this place is more along the lines of a gentleman's day spa.

Best Public Golf Course: East Potomac Golf Course (at Haines Point)
This public golf course, located within sight of the Washington Monument, is a favorite spot for DC golfers in need of a quick get-away with having to really get away. Referred to locally as simply "Haines Point", the complex consists of three courses: the 18-hole Blue Course, and two 9-hole executive courses, Red and White. Along with a golf school and double-decker driving range, there is a clubhouse and snack bar. While it's no Congressional Country Club, you are just as likely to see DC's famous and infamous heading out for an incognito round. Regardless, the views are what make this such a unique place; from the planes taking off and landing at Reagan National Airport across the Potomac to picturesque vignettes of iconic national monuments, it's a local treasure.

Best Private Golf Course: Congressional Country Club
Chances are, you'll never play here. Chances are, in fact, that you'll never even set foot on these hallowed grounds. But don't let that stop you from trying to find someone who is a member, and becoming their best friend. Because there is a very good chance that, should you find yourself in a cart on the Blue Course, former Presidents Bill Clinton or George H.W. Bush just might be in that foursome ahead of you. Apart from the stellar greens and fairways, the clubhouse is a beauty.
